Probiotics can also work as Antidepressants
Scientists have identified 'good' bacteria that can help alleviate depression. The bacteria improves the effectiveness of antidepressants. Expert use medication and psychotherapy to help patients escape from depression but despite of treatment, depression persists in some individuals. Patient with depression show prevalence of intestinal and digestive problems. Researchers suspect that the composition of bacterial community in gut plays important role in depressive symptoms. Researchers are therefore trying to improve existing therapies and develop new ones. The microbiome-gut-brain axis is seen as promising area. The microbiome is generally understood to mean all micro-organisms, that live in our body like intestinal flora. Intestinal flora can influence Nervous System for instance via metabolic products. In recent study, the researchers have shown the probiotics can support treatment with antidepressants. The scientists carried out series of experiments on volunteers. The analysis showed that there was greater improvement in the patients who took probiotics instead of placebo. In addition, the composition of intestinal flora changed temporarily. Stool samples revealed an increase in lactic acid bacteria at the end of treatment. However, the level of these health promoting gut bacteria decreased again over the following four weeks. Researchers explain that it takes longer for the new composition of the intestinal flora to stabilize. Another increasing effect of taking probiotics was seen in relation to brain activity, when viewing neutral or fearful faces. Certain brain regions are responsible for emotional processing, act differently in individuals with suffering from bad mental health. After four weeks of probiotics, this brain activity behaved normally again.
